What the Research Says About MSM for Dogs

If you're researching MSM for dogs, wondering whether MSM really works for dog joint health, or comparing MSM with glucosamine and chondroitin for dogs, there is genuine science worth understanding. The important nuance is that direct canine clinical research on MSM alone is still limited, while much of the evidence comes from MSM-containing combination supplements and broader research into how MSM works in the body.

At Dr. Ferg's, we think that distinction matters.

It's easy to call an ingredient "science-backed."

It's much more useful to show you the research, explain what it actually found, and be open about where the evidence still has limitations.

So, let's look at MSM without turning this into a biochemistry lecture.

What Is MSM and Why Is It Used for Dogs?

MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane.

It's a naturally occurring organosulfur compound, meaning it contains sulfur.

Sulfur is involved in many normal processes throughout the body and is associated with proteins and connective tissues.

That's one reason MSM has become a popular ingredient in joint supplements for dogs, often alongside glucosamine and chondroitin.

Researchers have also investigated MSM in relation to normal inflammatory processes, oxidative stress, exercise recovery, and musculoskeletal health.

But the obvious question for a dog owner is simpler:

Does MSM actually help dogs?

Let's look at what we know.

Study One: MSM, Glucosamine and Chondroitin in Dogs

A 2026 canine study of glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM supplementation followed dogs recovering from fractures of the radius-ulna or tibia-fibula.

Twelve dogs participated.

All were treated using external skeletal fixation, an orthopedic technique used to stabilize fractures.

Half received the orthopedic treatment alone.

The other half received the same treatment plus an oral supplement containing glucosamine hydrochloride, chondroitin sulfate, and MSM for two months.

Researchers then assessed the dogs' lameness and radiographic healing during their recovery.

What Did the Researchers Find?

Both groups improved.

However, the supplemented dogs showed faster functional recovery and earlier callus formation, with significant differences in healing scores reported at day 30.

By day 60, both groups had achieved near-complete fracture union.

That's an interesting result.

And, importantly for us, this is actual research in dogs.

But there are two big qualifications.

What Does This Study Actually Tell Us About MSM?

First, there were only 12 dogs.

That's a small study.

Second, and perhaps more importantly, the dogs weren't given MSM alone.

They received glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM together.

We therefore cannot say:

"MSM caused the improvement."

What we can say is that MSM was part of a three-ingredient combination associated with favorable recovery outcomes in this small canine study.

I'd like to see this followed up with much larger controlled studies, particularly research looking specifically at MSM in dogs.

For now, it's interesting supporting evidence rather than definitive proof.

Study Two: How Might MSM Work?

Direct clinical trials tell us whether something appears to produce an outcome.

Mechanistic research asks a different question:

Why might it produce that outcome?

A 2017 scientific review published in Nutrients examined MSM's potential biological mechanisms, applications, and safety.

This wasn't a clinical trial in dogs.

Instead, the researchers reviewed a wider body of laboratory, animal, and human evidence to understand how MSM may interact with the body.

MSM and Normal Inflammatory Processes

One of the areas researchers have investigated is how MSM interacts with normal inflammatory signaling.

You've probably heard inflammation discussed in relation to joints.

Inflammation itself isn't inherently bad. It's part of the body's normal response to physical stress and injury.

Problems arise when inflammatory processes become excessive or poorly regulated.

Research reviewed in the paper suggests MSM can influence several biological pathways involved in inflammatory signaling.

We could dive into names like NF-κB, IL-6 and TNF-α here.

But for the average dog owner, I don't think memorizing those terms is particularly useful.

The more important takeaway is that there is a plausible biological mechanism behind researchers' interest in MSM for musculoskeletal health.

MSM and Oxidative Stress

Researchers have also investigated MSM in relation to oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress is a normal consequence of metabolism and physical activity. The body has its own antioxidant systems to help keep it under control.

The scientific literature reviewed in this paper suggests MSM may influence oxidative stress and antioxidant processes.

Again, that's interesting.

But it is mechanistic evidence, not proof that giving MSM to your dog will result in a particular improvement in mobility.

That's an important distinction.

Study Three: What Happens When MSM Is Added to Glucosamine and Chondroitin?

Another useful piece of research looked at a question that is particularly relevant to joint supplement formulation.

Does adding MSM to glucosamine and chondroitin make a difference?

A 2017 randomized, double-blind controlled trial compared glucosamine and chondroitin with and without MSM.

There is one major thing you need to know about this study.

It was conducted in people, not dogs.

Researchers studied 147 people with knee osteoarthritis over three months.

One group received glucosamine and chondroitin.

Another received glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM.

A third received placebo.

What Did the Researchers Find?

The combination containing glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM produced favorable changes in the clinical measurements used during the study.

Interestingly, the glucosamine and chondroitin combination without MSM did not produce the same overall clinical improvement.

That makes the study interesting when we're trying to understand why MSM is so frequently combined with glucosamine and chondroitin.

But there's an obvious limitation.

These were humans.

Why Are We Talking About a Human Study in an Article About Dogs?

Because different types of research can contribute different pieces to the puzzle.

Human research can help us understand biological plausibility and give researchers ideas worth investigating further.

But dogs are not small humans.

Their physiology, metabolism, diseases, nutritional requirements, and responses to ingredients can differ.

So I would never use this human study as proof that MSM improves mobility in dogs.

Instead, I'd describe it as supporting evidence that helps explain scientific interest in combining MSM with glucosamine and chondroitin.

Then I'd look to canine research for the answers that specifically concern dogs.

Does MSM Really Work for Dogs?

This is probably what you actually came here to find out.

My answer is:

There is promising science behind MSM, but the direct canine evidence is not yet as strong as I'd like it to be.

We have a recent canine study showing favorable results with a combination of MSM, glucosamine, and chondroitin.

We have broader mechanistic research that helps explain why MSM is biologically interesting.

And we have human clinical research suggesting MSM may complement glucosamine and chondroitin.

Together, that gives MSM a credible scientific rationale.

But it does not prove that MSM alone improves mobility in dogs.

That's where I think supplement companies need to be careful.

"There's science behind this ingredient" and "this ingredient has been conclusively proven to work in dogs" are not the same statement.

For MSM, I think the first is fair.

Why Is MSM Often Combined With Glucosamine and Chondroitin?

If you've been comparing joint supplements for dogs, you've probably noticed these three ingredients appearing together again and again.

That isn't accidental.

They're used for different but potentially complementary reasons.

Glucosamine is associated with compounds involved in cartilage and connective tissue.

Chondroitin is naturally present within the cartilage matrix.

MSM is an organosulfur compound with research exploring its relationship with inflammatory signaling, oxidative stress, and musculoskeletal health.

Rather than expecting one ingredient to do everything, the idea is to support joint health through several complementary nutritional pathways.

That approach makes sense to me as a veterinarian and formulator.

Is MSM Better Than Glucosamine for Dogs?

I wouldn't frame it that way.

MSM and glucosamine aren't interchangeable ingredients.

They have different biological roles and different evidence bases.

The more useful question is whether each ingredient has enough scientific rationale to justify its place within a well-designed joint supplement.

For us, MSM does.

But we also don't use MSM as an excuse to leave out other well-researched mobility ingredients.

Where Does MSM Fit With Collagen and Green Lipped Mussel?

This is where a comprehensive approach to dog joint supplements starts to make more sense.

Healthy movement involves cartilage, collagen, joint fluid, muscles, tendons, ligaments, bone, and many normal biological processes working together.

Different nutritional ingredients can therefore approach joint health from different directions.

MSM provides an organosulfur compound with research into musculoskeletal and cellular processes.

Glucosamine and chondroitin have relationships with cartilage and connective tissues.

Collagen provides structural proteins and peptides.

Green Lipped Mussel provides a distinctive marine nutritional profile, including naturally occurring fatty acids and other compounds.

We don't need to decide that one of these ingredients is "the winner."

A thoughtful formula can use complementary ingredients for different reasons.

What the Research Doesn't Tell Us About MSM for Dogs

We need more high-quality canine research on MSM.

I'd particularly like to see larger randomized, placebo-controlled studies evaluating MSM independently in dogs with naturally occurring mobility challenges.

The canine study we've discussed was small and used MSM together with glucosamine and chondroitin.

The mechanistic review helps us understand how MSM may work, but isn't direct clinical evidence in dogs.

And the randomized trial comparing MSM with glucosamine and chondroitin was conducted in humans.

That's the current evidence landscape.

I don't think we need to hide those limitations to justify using MSM.

Quite the opposite.

Understanding the limitations is part of using science properly.

MSM for Active Dogs Across the United States

Joint support isn't only something to think about when your dog becomes old.

Dogs put normal physical demands on their joints throughout their lives.

A dog hiking trails with its family in California may regularly tackle hills and uneven terrain.

A working or highly active dog in Texas might cover substantial distances.

A Labrador in Florida may swim, run, and exercise outdoors for much of the year.

Different environments, different activities, same musculoskeletal system doing the work.

That doesn't mean every active dog needs MSM or a joint supplement.

But it does explain why supporting long-term mobility and normal recovery from everyday activity is an interesting area of canine nutrition.

There is broader research helping us understand how MSM may interact with inflammatory and oxidative processes.

And there is human clinical research investigating MSM alongside other established joint supplement ingredients.

But I'd also tell them that I want to see more direct canine research, especially large independent trials studying MSM itself.

That's not a weakness in our story.

That's science.

You work with the best evidence available today, you don't make it sound stronger than it is, and you keep paying attention as better evidence becomes available.
