90° this week — 3 things every dog owner should know

By veterinarian Dr. Feargus McConnell
Temperatures in parts of the US are set to climb into the high 80s and 90s on Wednesday. Because it’s still early in the season, many dogs (and owners) aren’t fully adjusted yet, and that’s when problems happen. Dogs in Texas could get particularly hot.
3 important things to keep in mind:
1. Never leave your dog in the car
Even on a mild day, temperatures inside a car can rise dangerously fast. In hotter weather, it can become life-threatening in 2 minutes.
2. Always provide water and shade
If your dog is outside, make sure they have access to fresh water and a cool place to rest. Heat builds quickly, especially in direct sun.
3. Watch the pavement
If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Stick to early morning or late evening activity where possible.
A sudden warm spell like this often catches people off guard, so a little awareness goes a long way.
Bonus tip:
Dogs will be shedding their winter coats right now, so give them quick brush twice a week to help them out.
